Marikina City is known as the shoe capital of the Philippines because of its shoe industry. It was formerly the capital of the province of Manila during the declaration of the Philippine Independence. The shoe museum, which is located in the city, houses the famous shoe collection of former first lady, Mrs. Imelda Marcos, shoes of past presidents, celebrities, shoes from other countries. It has the largest collection of pairs of shoes in the world. The shoe industry has become a pride of the city and the country. It has given the city and the country a boost on the economy. Although the city contains multinational companies, local and foreign, exporting firms, banks, business centers, hotels and condominiums, the city is still classified as residential.
